MHI Approves ₹504 Crore Investment for 4,874 EV Chargers Under PM E-DRIVE Scheme

India's electric vehicle charging infrastructure received a major boost in May 2026 when Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy announced the approval of ₹503.86 crores for installing 4,874 EV chargers across multiple states under the PM E-DRIVE scheme. This landmark announcement signals the government's commitment to building a nationwide interoperable charging ecosystem that will support India's ambitious clean mobility targets.\n\nThe approved funding covers eight states including Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, along with major Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) like HPCL, IOCL, and BPCL. The scheme allocates ₹2,000 crore specifically for developing EV public charging infrastructure nationwide, while dedicating ₹3,679 crore for demand incentives covering electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, ambulances, and trucks. Additionally, ₹4,391 crore has been earmarked for deploying over 14,028 electric buses across the country.\n\nThe government's strategy extends beyond mere infrastructure deployment to encompass the vehicle adoption ecosystem. The scheme targets supporting 24.79 lakh electric two-wheelers and 3.16 lakh electric three-wheelers, including e-rickshaws, e-carts, and L5 category vehicles. Together, these initiatives create a comprehensive ecosystem supporting electric vehicle manufacturing, component production, and charging infrastructure.\n\nA significant development accompanying this infrastructure push is the upcoming launch of the Unified Bharat e-Charge (UBC) platform. This national unified EV charging app will provide a single interface for discovering, accessing, and paying across multiple charging networks. The platform represents a paradigm shift similar to how UPI transformed digital payments, enabling seamless interoperability across charging operators.\n\nPulse Energy, the original technology architect behind the UBC integration layer, has played a crucial role in developing the technical bridge between charger hardware and UPI payment rails. This integration ensures that the massive infrastructure investment translates into a truly unified charging experience for consumers, where any EV can charge at any compatible station through standard payment methods.\n\nThe conference highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts between the Centre, states, BHEL, charge point operators, and industry stakeholders in creating an efficient charging ecosystem. This collaborative approach ensures standardization across platforms while enabling faster deployment timelines through enhanced public-private partnerships.\n\nThe FAME-II scheme precedent demonstrates the government's commitment to this sector, having already facilitated the installation of 8,932 EV chargers nationwide by Oil Marketing Companies with ₹873.5 crore in subsidy support. Karnataka alone received 721 chargers under FAME-II, providing a foundation for the expanded deployment under PM E-DRIVE.\n\nThis substantial investment comes at a critical juncture for India's automotive sector, which contributes over 7% to GDP, accounts for nearly half of manufacturing GDP, and supports close to 30 million livelihoods. The transition to electric mobility not only addresses environmental concerns but also strengthens energy security by reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports.\n\nFor charging operators looking to participate in this expanding ecosystem, the UBC framework provides standardized technical specifications and interoperability requirements. The platform enables operators to connect their charging infrastructure to the national network, ensuring compatibility with the unified payment and discovery system that will serve millions of EV users.\n\nAs India advances toward its Net Zero emissions target by 2070 and the Viksit Bharat vision for 2047, this infrastructure investment represents a foundational step in transforming the country's mobility landscape. The coordinated deployment of charging infrastructure, supported by unified digital platforms and comprehensive policy frameworks, positions India to lead the global clean mobility transformation while creating significant economic opportunities across the value chain.
